"We do not know what tomorrow holds, but we do know the world will be far different. You will not here me this way again, good bye."
That was the last broadcast message before The Surge. It was heard world wide, translated into every language so that the whole world knew what was about to happen, but it wasn't warning enough. The general populace had no idea that The Surge was going to happen until a few hours before, but the people who did it knew it was the only option. By that time the Great War, a war that blew World War 1 and 2 out of the water. Entire countries were gone and it was only a matter of time before Mutually Assured Destruction happened. The remaining world leaders met to figure out a way to end the war without ending the world. The conference was tense, especially since so few leaders were left, and even fewer left due to the assassination of the radical leader of the European Federation, formerly the European Union. A second meeting was held in secret, between a group of representatives from North America and Asia, the only continents with any remaining leadership, planned The Surge. A global electro magnetic pulse that would shut down almost everything and set the world back several hundred years. By the time the message was broadcast it was too late to stop it, the missiles that were supposed to be carrying a nuclear pay load had been swapped out and as they went off, the world went dark.
That was 30 years ago
Now, the world is still without power. Some people have theorized that the missiles that triggered The Surge were satellites and not bombs, thus making their effects last much longer than anyone hoped. There have been many attempts to get power back since and all of failed. All people could do is adapt and accept the new world they live in while making the most of what can be scavenged from the old world. The state of Illinois was never particularly interesting, but you can make it so in our Post Surge world. Create a character, create a story, and do what you need to do to survive After the Surge.
